A few notable highlights:
- Cummings Research Park, in Huntsville, is the 2nd largest research park in the U.S.
- Southern Research, in Birmingham, has developed 7 FDA approved cancer drugs. Southern Research is pursuing a “3D” strategy—drug discovery and development; diagnostics and data; and drivers of commercialization and has 180 active patents, $300 million in economic impact, 41 new drug candidates and has tested 50 percent of all active chemotherapies in the U.S.
- Researchers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) are advancing computational biology and personalized medicine, improving treatments and outcomes for deadly diseases. In 2023, they received $413.7M from National Institute of Health awards, keeping UAB in the top 1 percent of all NIH-funded institutions. According to the latest data available from the National Science Foundation’s HERD survey, UAB ranks fifth among public universities and 14th overall nationwide in clinical trials expenditures. In 2023, there were 1,469 active clinical trials at UAB.
- UAB Medicine is home to the eighth largest hospital in the country, facilitating nearly 2 million patient visits annually. They see continued medical breakthroughs such as xenotransplantation (study in JAMA provides additional data as UAB seeks approval for Phase I clinical trials) and the first uterus transplant in the Southeast, among just four in the nation.
- At HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology, scientists have made discoveries that unlock the mysteries of ALS, cancer, and more.
- By developing genomic tools, researchers at the HudsonAlpha Center for Plant Science and Sustainable Agriculture are exploring ways to replace bad plant genes with better ones. With these plant biotech tools, they’ll be able to create improved crops, maximize fuel production from plant biomass, reduce fertilizer use, and eliminate fungicides to increase yields.
