Why you should Invest in Europe Now: Innovative Models to generate Profits & Impact
Join us for a presentation about the innovative investment models that are being developed in the EU to attract private monies for public good.
Investors increasingly seek investment opportunities with verifiable societal impact (e.g. green or social). In the years to come, we can expect the importance of the sector to grow further as globally, USD 24 trillion will be transferred from the generation of baby boomers to millennials, who are on average much more inclined to invest “with impact”. To provide investors with such investment opportunities, the public and private sectors can usefully cooperate.
At the EU level, a key initiative is the InvestEU programme. Public guarantees are used to de-risk and mobilise investment opportunities which have desired public benefit (target volume is EUR 650 billion in investment over seven years). The public good, to be delivered within the frame of InvestEU, can relate to different dimensions: sustainability in the green sense, social investment, innovation, and support for SMEs. Moreover, the European Commission develops guidelines for harmonised reporting on non-financial impact, the so-called taxonomy.
The session will explain from an investor angle:
● How are projects evaluated as investable, i.e. bankable and conducive to the provision of public goods?
● Who decides if an investment is project is eligible?
● What is the governance underpinning InvestEU?
In parallel, financial markets are developing rapidly, providing increasing volumes of green bonds and sustainable investment opportunities.
● Still, is there a sufficient volume of projects that create impact in the millennial sense?
● What else is needed to make the sector flourish?
● How can we account for impact, as opposed to purely financial accounting?
Our panelists will also discuss:
● how the new financing model addresses risk-sharing, pipeline development and -selection
● co-investment opportunities for US investors
● new modeling schemes to measure impact beyond green (ecological/environmental, societal etc.)
● Experience so far of the fund, incl. what works and what does not
