BY INVITATION ONLY | ‘Positioning Europe in a World of Geopolitical Tensions and Rivalry’ – An exclusive discussion with Paolo Gentiloni, European Commissioner for Economy

Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, rising tensions between the US and China, and the perspective of an increasingly multi-polar world confront Europe with an increasingly challenging environment, both politically and economically. Concerns about economic resilience, security of supply chains, and avoiding excessive economic dependencies are weighing on everybody’s minds.

EACCNY is organizing an exclusive conversation with Paolo Gentiloni, European Commissioner for Economy, to discuss how Europe is addressing these challenges: staying the course on its green transition, preserving its industrial competitiveness and defending an open, rules-based multilateral economic order.

Paolo Gentiloni is the European Commissioner for Economy since December 2019.

In his current role he is – among others – coordinating the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals within the EU’s economic governance framework, working on further deepening the Economic and Monetary Union, and overseeing the application and reform of the Stability and Growth Pact.

He is also responsible for implementing the NextGenerationEU and InvestEU initiatives. Mr. Gentiloni is leading international efforts to find a coordinated international approach to the taxation of multinational companies.

In the framework of the European Green Deal, he has also been responsible for preparing the proposal for a Carbon Border Tax

He previously served as Prime Minister of Italy (2016-2018), Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (2014-2016), Member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs (2013-2014), and Minister of Communications (2006-2008).

He was formerly Spokesperson for the Margherita Party (2002-2007), Chairman of the Broadcasting Services Watchdog Committee (2005-2006), and Spokesperson for the Mayor of Rome and Commissioner in the City of Rome (1993-2000). He also worked as a professional journalist. Born in 1954, Gentiloni graduated in Political Sciences from La Sapienza, Rome. His latest book is “La sfida impopulista” (the (Un)populist challenge).
